Frequently asked questions

As of April 6, 2026, HMRC is changing how self-employed individuals and landlords report income. If your total qualifying income (gross turnover) is over £50,000, you are now legally required to keep digital records and use MTD-compatible software.

💡 Tax2u Tip

If your income falls between £30,000–£50,000, your deadline is April 2027. Start preparing now to make the transition seamless—we’re here to help.

The "Once-a-Year" stress is over, but the frequency has increased. Instead of one Self-Assessment return, you will now submit:

  • Four Quarterly Updates (summaries of income and expenses).
  • One Final Declaration (to confirm your final tax position by January 31st).Tax2u Limited handles the transition for you, ensuring your UTR is linked correctly to the new MTD system.

You can, but they must be "digitally linked" to HMRC via bridging software. Manual data entry into the HMRC portal is no longer an option for MTD-mandated businesses.

  • The Tax2u Solution: We provide the software and bookkeeping support to ensure your records meet HMRC`s "Digital Link" requirements without you having to become an IT expert.

To avoid the new points-based penalty system, keep these dates in your calendar:

  • April 6, 2026: MTD becomes mandatory for £50k+ earners.
  • August 7, 2026: First quarterly update due.
  • January 31, 2028: Final Declaration for the 26/27 tax year due.

We offer a "Full Compliance" package. We don`t just give you software; we provide:

  • Bookkeeping Review: Ensuring your expenses are categorized correctly to maximize tax savings.
  • Submission Management: We handle all four quarterly updates and the final declaration.
  • UTR & Registration Support: We ensure your business is registered for MTD for Income Tax correctly from day one.
